Well, that was fun... NOT!

Uh... I think I just infected my system by... downloading Windows critical updates. O.o;; I already had SP2, so it was just some updates, but after the reboot, my virus software stopped coming up with the system and I couldn't access the internet.
Tried for over an hour to figure it out and finally ended up doing a system restore. It doesn't seem likely... but I'm afraid to try it again.
Anybody else had any trouble?

*waves hand*

I did just after I returned from Y-Con (a week and some ago?). I did a restore as well, and haven't had a problem I've been ignoring the update button that keeps coming up now. Too afraid of stuff crashing.

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I finally broke down and installed service pack 2 yesterday and everything seemed fine. But I didn't do any of the others, and I thought I'd catch up today. There were only a couple of security things and a cumulative patch, but the system has been acting weird as hell ever since. O.o
I think I'll go do a backup... >.>

[identity profile] suzu.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I ended up taking SP2 off my system. Too many bugs and issues. I'll wait until it's been out a lot longer before I try again.

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been watching SP2 at work, and thought I had it figured out. Though, I put it on last night and didn't start having trouble until tonight when I tried to do the rest of the updates. And now I can't get my stinking virus software to reload for anything. ~_~ Getting a little tired of this whole thing.
Ya try and do the right thing... *sigh*

[identity profile] kwycksylver.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I understand reading other friends's LJs about the Windows updates that yes, the last update or two did interfere with antivirus programs and firewalls, especially from Symantec (Norton). Symantec (and probably any other security companies that the updates affected) had to make their own patch(es).

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... that seems to be what happened. And even though I did the system restore, I can't seem to get the anti-virus program straightened back around. O.o If I have to rebuild this stupid system, I'm going to be seriously put-out. ~_~

[identity profile] kwycksylver.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll probably just need to uninstall and reinstall your anti virus program.

From all the negative things I read about XP and it's updates, I'm kind of hoping my comp with it's Win98SE will last until the next Windows version comes out.

But I'm not holding my breath.

[identity profile] suzu.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing just wreaked total havok on my internet connection. I'd done a lot of reading up on SP2 prior to installing, and knew that internet/firewall things was one of the changes, but no matter what I did, nothing fixed it. Even totally disabling the new functions didn't work.

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've uninstalled and (tried to) reinstall three times. Now it's telling me that this version of McAfee is not compatible with my Operating System. Despite the fact that it's been running on this Operating system just fine up until now. >.<;;
I've had no complaints with XP up until now... but I'm starting to get a little irritated. ~_~

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
*looks up with screw driver clamped in teeth and a feral gleam in her eye*
So help me God... if I didn't have so much uh... 'art' on this thing, I'd drag it into work and make my tech geek buddy, who kept reassuring me that SP2 was no biggie, fix it! *grrrr*

[identity profile] kwycksylver.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You should be able to go to McAfee's website and download from there. If that doesn't work, there is a free version of AVG you can download from http://www.grisoft.com , it's a really good antivirus program, too.

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Or I could throw it against the wall and... *cough*
Ok... maybe not. Even tried back-reving the stupid virus software, but the old one won't load either. It's weird... SP2 doesn't register as being there anymore, but it's still on the add/remove programs list. Maybe if I try taking it off even though it's not really there...
Gotta love phantom software uninstalls! :P

[identity profile] kwycksylver.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
that might work, it might be in your downloaded program files folder too, or whatever XPs equivalent is, you'll need to delete it from there too

[identity profile] lavendarlizard.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You already know, in great detail, how I feel about SP2... Goddamn paternalistic megalopoly... I ain't touching those updates; I don't care how much it blinks, whines and screams at me.

Have a truffle; it'll help cut the taste of screwdriver.

[identity profile] loika.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, yes! That Service Pack 2 killed my system big time, and kept on telling me obvious things as if I was missing half my brain. I had to reconfigure a whole buncha things to get it working properly again. =.=;

Honestly, when were computers made for people who couldn't think for themselves?

[identity profile] ravensilver.livejournal.com 2004-11-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I ended up taking all the Service Packs *off* my computer again, since it kept shutting down the Windows explorer whenever I needed to work directly with my files. I figured that since I *do* have an extra firewall and virus program, I don't really need those SPs... especially not, if they screw up my system. :(

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... this is just... *grrr* The most irritating thing. Uninstalling SP2 and I keep getting these OMG! messages telling me that if I uninstall it, all these things on my system may stop working. Like... EVERYTHING. ~_~ I swear... it's listing every piece of hardware on the system and warning me that I might be breaking it. *rolls eyes*

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I got the backup done. Though I am disturbed that I have so much stuff on here that it won't fit on a single CD anymore. ^^;
I'm putting everything the hell back the way it was and then I shall go write on the black-board a hundred times...
If it ain't broke... don't fix it!

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well... I can kinda see the attraction for people like my in-laws, who infect their damn system with a virus every few freakin' DAYS. (And then have to call for help to fix it.) But this is just ridiculous. >.<;
And I think I must be jinxed... we've been loading SP2 on systems at work for a month now... no real problems once you figure out how to turn everything off. So I broke down and put it on MY system and look what happened!! *grrrr*

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still trying to figure out exactly which piece actually broke it. It's some combination of SP2 and my virus software. Or else, whatever ELSE was in those other updates. ~_~ I just want everything working again. I have an internet to surf! I don't want to be spending my time futzing with my stupid operating system! ^o^
I brought it to work today... Hmmm... maybe I should change my background from that picture of Duo... >.>

[identity profile] kwycksylver.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
You know, Linux is looking pretty good right now.

eep! damn

(Anonymous) 2004-11-19 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
OH damn! thanks for the warnings . I ended up downloading the SP2 onto my laptop and it has been working fine, but i have not done any of the up graded the system. I do not think i will be doing that either from what everyone is saying. Thank you for the heads up

Maria

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well... I just wish I knew what I was warning you about, because I'm still not sure just what happened. SP2 was working fine and it wasn't until I did the rest of the updates, and tried to upgrade my virus software, that I started having problems. It seems to be related to the virus software (McAfee) but it's the same stupid software we use at work and nobody else has had any problems with it!
With everything in place, the CPU usage goes to 100% everytime I try to access the internet using IE. However... loaded Mozilla Firefox and accessed the internet just fine. O.o
I even stumped the tech geek at work! ^___^
So this may be something specific to my stupid computer. O.o

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hell... DOS is starting to freaking look good right now! ~_~
Apparently my specific little computer + McAfee + SP2 does not equal a good thing. This is the same set up we use on all the computers at work and nobody else is having any problems.
Hmmm... maybe SP2 looked at my harddrive and is trying to protect the internet from my kinky art! ^o^

[identity profile] kwycksylver.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe SP2 looked at my harddrive and is trying to protect the internet from my kinky art! ^o^

You have no idea how hard that made me laugh!

::snickers:: Nuthin' like the threat of a virus to make an obessive-compulsive back-uper outta you, eh?

::shudders:: I avoid anything that came out later than Professional 2000. and patches. patches are *bad*. they seem to do nothing but rip *more* holes and cause more problems. I got a nice long lecture about them from my god-father. he's a comp sci professer at OSU and tends to be *very* oppinionated when it comes to windows.

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm generally rather shy of the big ones, and I wait until they've been 'field tested' before I down-load them. But we've been using SP2 at work for a month or so without any trouble. It turned out to somehow be something between my virus software and the new service pack. Despite the fact that it's the SAME damn virus software we use at work! O.o;;

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-19 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... it HAD been a couple of days since my last backup. ^__~

Evil compy demons. When in doubt, blaim the evil compy demons.

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it's either that or some sort of compy curse... O.o

[identity profile] loika.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
;__; If I gave life a cookie, do you think it'll be nicer to us?

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-21 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Or at least distract it enough that I could get away? ^^;

(Anonymous) 2004-11-24 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I had trouble. I did the good old system restore thingy too because my virus scan wouldn't work, and then the darn thing denied me access to my dics drive, and oh look, I need that thing! Crapping, sanctimonious SP2! Bleah!

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2004-11-25 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we have come to a shaky truce, SP2 and I... though I had to change virus software, which really pissed me off.
And I would like to insert a virtual smack for my tech geek Cube-mate, who, AFTER the fact commented, 'Oh. I've seen stuff like that before. It's usually a good idea to uninstall your virus software before doing any of the major service packs.' *twitch twitch* NOW you tell me, sucker. ~_~
